Former Pakistan captain and veteran wicketkeeper-batter Sarfaraz Ahmed is likely to lose his captaincy in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2024) ahead of the upcoming edition. The PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators recently made significant changes in their coaching staff.

They appointed Shane Watson as the head coach and Shaun Tait as the bowling coach. Another major change might be on the way, as the Quetta Gladiators’ captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed, could be removed from the position after leading the side for eight years.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the Quetta Gladiators owner, Nadeem Omar, is set to meet with new head coach Shane Watson in the coming days, and they will take the final decision on the captaincy in the coming days for the upcoming PSL 2024.

The report further suggested that Watson is expected to be asked for his views on the change in leadership and Sarfaraz’s future as the Quetta Gladiators skipper.

Nadeem Omer told a local podcast: “Sarfaraz has been off the boil over the last couple of years. There are a lot of reasons for that - the way he was unceremoniously ousted by the PCB didn't help, especially when he had a few more years. We won't dump him unceremoniously.”

He added, “We haven't decided yet but we'll give him full honours. Sarfaraz told me he would be happy to step aside if Quetta wants to make a change. We have a call with Shane Watson in a couple of days and then we'll decide.”

Sarfaraz, 36, was appointed Gladiators captain when the league was inaugurated in 2016, and led his side to the final. He led Gladiators to the PSL title in 2019, but sine then, Gladiators have missed qualifying for the playoffs the last four years, and finished bottom or second from bottom each time.

There's no definite information about who will replace Sarfaraz, but Rilee Rossouw and Saud Shakeel are probably top contenders for the captaincy of the Quetta Gladiators.
