Du Plessis' last appearance for South Africa came in a Test match against Pakistan in February 2021. In white-ball cricket, he last donned the national jersey in a T20I clash versus England in December 2020.

After Du Plessis announced his Test retirement in 2021, the selectors overlooked him in the ODI and T20I formats as well. Since then, he has been participating in various leagues across the globe.

With the fast-approaching T20 World Cup 2024, Faf said he has been in constant talks with CSA and his comeback might be a reality.

“I believe that I can return to international cricket,” Du Plessis told the broadcaster of Abu Dhabi T10 league.

“We have been speaking about this for the last couple of years. It’s just figuring out the balance of the T20 World Cup next year. It’s certainly something we have spoken about with the new coach.”

He may have turned 39 in July this year, but Faf du Plessis is considered as one of the fittest cricketers in the world.

Du Plessis also talked about the hard yards he puts in to stay fit. “I do a lot of hard work to ensure I look after my body to be able to play this brilliant game we love so much. When you do get a little bit older, you have to make sure you put in the work. Otherwise, the hamstring and other body parts do not work that well. There is a lot of fast running and a lot of stuff to make sure that level where you can play against the best players in the world,” he remarked.

Faf du Plessis has represented South Africa in 50 T20Is, amassing 1528 runs at a strike rate of over 134 with one century and 10 fifties.
