Glenn Maxwell targets away series on the subcontinent for his Test return

Maxwell has played just seven Tests for Australia, with the last coming in September 2017.

Glenn Maxwell | GettyAustralia’s white-ball specialist Glenn Maxwell is hopeful of making a return to Test cricket despite being overlooked for the last six years.

Maxwell is targeting an away series on the subcontinent at the end of the current WTC cycle. He has played just seven Tests for his country, with the last coming against Bangladesh in September 2017.

In the meantime, Maxwell played a key role in Australia’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 triumph and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 victory.

While Maxwell knows he is better suited to the limited-overs format, the 35-year-old still wants to make a mark in Test cricket.

"I'm quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They're playing some really good cricket, they're World Test champions," Maxwell said on Australian radio station SEN on Tuesday.

"There's not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side. I don't think there's another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I'll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage," he added.

Australia are slated to tour Sri Lanka at the start of 2025 to battle it out for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy.

Former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson recently launched a scathing attack on David Warner and chief selector George Bailey, asking why the veteran opener was given the luxury of a farewell Test despite his struggles in red-ball cricket lately.

In his column for the West Australian, Johnson also slammed Warner for never owning up to his role in the ball-tampering scandal.

While Maxwell refused to get drawn into this discussion, he hailed Warner as an absolute champion of Australian cricket.

"I'm not going to throw my name into some headlines about this," Maxwell said.

"But Davey's been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I'm looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer," he further remarked.
