Rahul Dravid's two-year contract as Team India head coach expired with the culmination of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 on November 19.
While there is no clarity on whether Dravid will reapply for the post, a report published in ESPNcricinfo claims that the BCCI offered him an extension last week to continue as head coach.
According to the report, the board made this move to preserve the structural legacy he has created over the past two years. However, the offer still awaits Dravid's verdict.
If Dravid accepts the offer, his second stint as head coach would kick off with India's tour of South Africa, featuring three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests. The all-format tour will be played from December 10 to January 7.
India’s next big assignment will be the five-match Test series against England at home, followed by the T20 World Cup 2024 in USA and West Indies.
The report also suggests that Dravid’s second tenure would mean the retention of same set of assistant coaches he had worked with. In his first stint, Vikram Rathour and Paras Mhambrey served the team as batting and bowling coaches respectively while T Dilip played the role of a fielding coach.
Rahul Dravid was appointed as India’s head coach in November 2021. During his time, the team reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 and the final of the World Test Championship and Cricket World Cup.
After the World Cup final loss to Australia, Dravid remained non-committal about the possibility of coaching the team in next year's T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.
"Honestly, I haven't thought about it. I think all our campaign, all our energies were focused on this match, focused on this tournament, and focused till here," Dravid had told reporters.
