VVS Laxman likely to take charge as India's interim coach for Australia T20Is post World Cup: Report

Rahul Dravid's tenure as head coach is due to expire at the conclusion of the World Cup.

VVS Laxman | GettyAfter the culmination of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Team India will play a five-match T20I series against Australia at home from November 23 to December 3.

For the series, National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman might take charge of the Indian team as interim coach, PTI reported on Thursday (October 26).

It is pertinent to mention here that Rahul Dravid's tenure as head coach is due to expire at the conclusion of the World Cup.

While BCCI has the option to invite him to reapply for the job, it will be interesting to see if the 51-year-old wants to continue as head coach of the national team, which involves extensive travelling throughout the year.

Nonetheless, Dravid will be reportedly given a much-needed rest after the daunting World Cup campaign.

"VVS Laxman has always been in charge when Rahul has taken a break and same thing is likely to continue for the series just after the World Cup," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Laxman could emerge as a strong candidate in case fresh applications are invited since he has been in charge of NCA for the last couple of years and knows the system inside out.

The report also claimed that young players, who featured in the T20I series in West Indies, Ireland and the Asian Games, will be part of the Australia T20Is as senior cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah will be given a break to freshen up ahead of the all-format South Africa tour, slated to get underway on December 10.
