Shubman Gill moves closer to dethroning Babar Azam as no.1 ranked ODI batter in latest update

Josh Hazlewood remains the no.1 ranked ODI bowler.

Babar Azam and Shubman Gill | GettyIndia opener Shubman Gill has made progress towards the no.1 spot in the latest ICC ODI players’ rankings on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. Babar Azam is in danger of losing his numero uno spot.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam's lead at the top of the ODI batting rankings has been reduced to just six rating points. Babar Azam's rating points have dropped to 829 despite scoring 157 runs in five innings in the ongoing Cricket World Cup. He has scored fifties against India and most recently against Afghanistan.

On the other hand, Gill has 95 runs from just three matches for India, with the right-hander improving to 823 rating points on the back of his exceptional knock of 53 against Bangladesh in Pune.

Apart from Gill, South African opener Quinton de Kock is also threatening Babar Azam’s throne. De Kock has hammered three centuries in the ongoing World Cup, which is his final appearance in ODI cricket.

His South Africa teammate Heinrich Klaasen (up seven places to fourth and a new career-high rating) also made good ground, while experienced duo Virat Kohli (improved three spots) and David Warner (up two spots) share fifth place on the rankings after some good performances in India.

In the ODI bowling rankings, Josh Hazlewood is also barely holding onto his No. 1 spot, with India's Mohammed Siraj (up one spot to second) as his closest contender after scalping six wickets in five World Cup matches.
