David Warner hails MS Dhoni as “greatest finisher” in the history of cricket

Dhoni scored 10,000 runs in ODIs despite batting in the lower middle-order.

David Warner | GettyVeteran Australia opener David Warner has hailed former India skipper MS Dhoni as the greatest finisher in cricket history and termed South African legend Jacques Kallis as the greatest of all time.

Warner is currently in India with the Australian team to take part in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, slated to get underway on October 5 in Ahmedabad.

Ahead of the showpiece tournament, the southpaw took part in a rapid-fire Q&A session on JioCinema, where he talked about his inspirations as a cricketer and expressed his love for the Indian culture among other things.

Q: Which cricketer inspired you to start playing cricket?

A: For me, Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist were my idols. I wanted to play how they played the game. I wanted to be a leg spinner, Gilchrist was an opening dasher and Ricky Ponting – one of our best cricketers ever.

Q: Who is the G.O.A.T of cricket?

A: Without a doubt Jacques Kallis.

Q: Which is your favourite innings in international cricket?

A: 335 (not out) against Pakistan at Adelaide in 2019.

Q: Who do you think is the greatest finisher in the history of cricket?

A: For me, it’s MS Dhoni.

Q: Your greatest moment from your cricket career?

A: Winning the 2015 World Cup.

Q: Who is the one film star you would want to make a reel with?

A: Allu Arjun.

Q: A cricketer from the past you would like to open the batting with.

A: Two cricketers – Sachin Tendulkar in ODI cricket and Virender Sehwag or Mathew Hayden in Test cricket.

Q: If you were not a cricketer, what would you be?

A: An astronaut.

Q: What is the one Indian dish you really enjoy eating?

A: Hyderabadi Biryani.

Q: If you had to pick one batter to bat for your life. Who would you pick?

A: Rahul Dravid

David Warner is heading into the World Cup on the back of a strong show in the away ODI series versus South Africa and India. The left-hander registered scores of 0, 106, 78, 12 and 10 in five ODIs against the Proteas, while he slammed three successive half-centuries (52, 53 and 56) in as many 50-over games against India.

Australia are due to open their World Cup campaign against host India in Chennai on October 8.
