Ish Sodhi and Hasan Mahmud | FanCode/XBowlers running out batters at the non-striker’s end for backing up too far used to be a rare occurrence but it has become quite common in recent times.

Bangladesh medium-pacer Hasan Mahmud could have been the latest to pull off this run out against New Zealand in the second ODI in Dhaka on Saturday (September 22) as he dislodged the bails at the non-striker’s end when Ish Sodhi was trying to steal a few yards.

However, Mahmud’s effort went in vain as Bangladesh stand-in skipper Litton Das decided to withdraw the appeal and Sodhi made his way back to the crease.

After being called back, the Kiwi cricketer hugged Hasan Mahmud in the middle before he resumed his innings.

After the ICC amended its rule book in October 2022, such run-outs at the bowler’s end are no longer considered ‘unfair play’. However, the debate continues on whether this mode of dismissal is against the spirit of cricket or not.

As it turned out, Ish Sodhi went on to score 35 off 39 balls to help New Zealand post 254/10 on the board. He was batting on 17 when Mahmud ran him out at the bowler’s end.
