Former India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar has taken a social media user to task over a fake quote attributed to his father – the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.
Recently, a social media post went viral claiming that Gavaskar slammed the BCCI for ‘letting the country down’.
The post was also noticed by Rohan who rubbished the statement by calling it fabricated.
“Sunil Gavaskar on NDTV: It should be a matter of utter shame for us as Indians for politicizing, ruining and basically hijacking this beautiful game of cricket. BCCI has let India down and tonight’s results are a testimony of it,” a user wrote on X after the India versus Pakistan game in Pallekele was called off due to rain on Saturday (September 2).
Rohan then issued a clarification by writing: “This is a completely fabricated statement attributed to my father. He hasn’t made this statement and someone is just trying to create mischief. It’s absolutely ridiculous that people would use his name to get more engagement. Please retweet so that the truth prevails.”
He further wrote: “He is under contract with India today so he wouldn’t speak to Ndtv anyway !”
It is pertinent to mention here that Sri Lanka was not supposed to host the Asia Cup 2023. It was a last-minute decision as the Asian Cricket Council had no choice but to opt for a hybrid model after BCCI refused to send its team to Pakistan, the designated host for the tournament.
As per the hybrid model, four games of the continental tournament will be held in Pakistan while rest of the fixtures including all of India’s matches and the final will be held in Sri Lanka.
