With the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 around the corner, Australia’s swashbuckling batter Glenn Maxwell has picked up a fresh injury.

Maxwell hurt his ankle during a training session in Durban ahead of Australia's three-match T20I series against South Africa, starting August 30. He will now fly back home to be alongside his wife as they await the birth of their first child, according to the ICC.

While the ODI World Cup is slated to be held in India from October 5 to November 19, the participating teams need to finalize their squads prior to September 28.

Maxwell is likely to recover from his ankle injury in due time, but national selector Tony Dodemaide made it clear that no risks would be taken with the 34-year-old given his injury history.

Notably, Maxwell had suffered a broken left fibula in a horrific mishap during a friend's birthday party days after Australia were eliminated from the T20 World Cup last November. The injury required urgent surgery and an extended rehabilitation period.

Nonetheless, Dodemaide sounded confident that Maxwell will be ready for Australia's ODI series against India next month.

"We will monitor Glenn's recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup," Dodemaide quoted as saying by ICC.

Maxwell's injury paved the way for Matthew Wade’s comeback to the T20I squad for the series against South Africa.
