Sri Lanka wrist-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has announced his retirement from Test cricket on Tuesday (August 15). Hasaranga, who featured in just four Tests for his country after making his debut in 2020, scored 196 runs and took 4 wickets.
The 26-year-old bowling all-rounder took the decision to extend his white-ball career, where he has prospered in the international arena as well as franchise cricket. He played the last of his four Tests in 2021.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) accepted Hasaranga's decision after he informed them. “We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward,” said Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Hasaranga will continue to represent Sri Lanka in both white-ball formats, where he has taken 67 wickets in 48 ODIs and 91 wickets in 58 T20Is. He has also contributed usefully with the bat, scoring 832 runs and 533 runs in ODIs and T20Is respectively.
Recently, he helped Sri Lanka qualify for the ODI World Cup by taking 22 wickets in the qualifier tournament which was held in Zimbabwe. He will be expected to play a big role for the 1996 winners in their upcoming campaign in India.
