Shakib takes over following Tamim Iqbal's resignation on August 3 after he was ruled out of the Asia Cup because of a back injury. The other names in contention for captaincy were Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

However, Shakib was preferred due to his experience and the fact that he is currently the Bangladesh Test and T20I captain.  He has captained Bangladesh in ODIs previously as well and led them in the 2011 World Cup.

Nazmul Hasan, the BCB President confirmed Shakib’s appointment as ODI captain and said: "We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members.”

He had led Bangladesh in 50 ODIs and won 23 matches, lost 29 with one no-result. It was an on-again-off-again job for Shakib, who was essentially deputizing for the frequently-injured Mashrafe Mortaza. Shakib later captained Bangladesh in three more ODIs, each time standing in for Mashrafe.

Shakib has so far led Bangladesh in 19 Tests and 39 T20Is, and the last of his ODIs as captain was in 2017.
