Dinesh Karthik opines on ‘silly’ formats of 6-team T20 Leagues like PSL, CPL and others

Many T20 leagues like PSL, CPL and others have six teams and follow format of 10-team IPL.

Many T20 leagues like PSL, CPL and others have six teams and follow format of 10-team IPL.Veteran cricketer Dinesh Karthik has shared his opinion on the formats of some of the T20 leagues in the world which have only 6 teams participating in them and four going to knock out stages.

Karthik, who also played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2023 recently, expressed his displeasure with such formats of different T20 leagues.

While he abstained from naming any league in particular, some prominent ones like the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the newly started Major League Cricket (MLC), and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) amongst others follow the same format as the IPL, a 10-team league of four teams qualifying for the playoffs.

WI v IND 2023: Shimron Hetmyer returns as West Indies announce 15-member squad for India ODIs

You know what do I find SILLY these days. In a 6 team tournament if you are going to have 4 teams in the playoffs I am talking about leagues happening around the world. I mean, come on. Any views on this!!” Karthik tweeted.

Following his tweet, a user suggested in case of T20 leagues having just six teams, the topper in the league stage should go directly into the final, and the teams in the second and third place play in a knockout game for the summit clash.

Dinesh Karthik replied saying that this would be fair and pointed out that this same method was used in the recent Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023). He agreed with the user and added that such a scenario would increase the quality of matches during the league stage of the competitions.

I quite agree with this. Fair play. Like how it was during the WPL. makes a lot of sense. Also I feel there will be a distinct difference in the quality of matches in the league stage if this format is applied,” he responded.
