Liton Das to lead Bangladesh in last two ODIs against Afghanistan after Tamim Iqbal’s shock resignation

Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect on July 6.

Liton Das | GettyLiton Das has been named Bangladesh’s captain for the remainder of the ODI series against Afghanistan at home.

This development comes after Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal stunned one and all by announcing his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect on Thursday (July 6).

Having lost the first ODI by 17 runs via DLS method, Bangladesh are trailing 0-1 to Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series.

Liton, who recently led Bangladesh to a record 546-run win in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, said the team is focused on the future as they want to level the series by winning the second ODI in Chattogram on Saturday (July 8).

"It is difficult to say whether we will miss him. If I am injured today, the team will not miss me," Liton told reporters.

"Going forward, newcomers will keep coming. Someday we will also go. Since he [Tamim] is not there, we should not talk much about that topic," he added.

However, Liton Das admitted that the team was taken aback by Tamim Iqbal’s decision.

"None of us could realise this decision was coming. He gave the Bangladesh team a lot for so many years and led the team. I and all our teammates respect his decision," he remarked.

The third and final match of the ODI series will also be held in Chattogramon on July 11. The 50-over series will be followed by two T20Is in Sylhet on July 14 and 16.
