Australian spinner Nathan Lyon’s Ashes 2023 series might come to an early end after he suffered a calf strain while fielding on day two of the ongoing second Test at Lord’s.
Lyon, who is playing his 100th consecutive Test, becoming the first specialist bowler to achieve this feat in cricket, pulled up while chasing a ball in the 37th over and felt acute pain. He staggered to the field's edge, where the physio started to evaluate him. He then needed assistance getting around the rope to the pavilion.
Medical scans on Thursday evening confirmed that Lyon had suffered a "significant strain" to his calf which will require a "period of rehabilitation".
As per Cricket Australia, Lyon might bat if required later in the game although runners are no longer allowed in international cricket. However, the 36-year-old appears highly unlikely to bowl for the rest of the series.
"He will require a period of rehabilitation after this match is concluded. A decision regarding his availability for the remainder of the series will be made at the conclusion of the game,” CA spokesperson was quoted by cricket.com.au.
A solemn Lyon was unable to take to the field on Friday morning after arriving at the ground on crutches and wearing a white compression sock on his right calf, joining teammates out in the middle of Lord's for their pre-play address.
Steve Smith, at the end of day 2, said that if Lyon doesn’t bowl any more in the series, it will be a huge loss for Australia going forward.
Lyon's absence leaves Australia having to rely on Steve Smith, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne for any spin required.
He was also seen talking to Todd Murphy, who might very well make his Ashes debut next week in the third Test at Headingley.
