Shreyas Iyer undergoes successful back surgery; likely to be fit for World Cup- Report

Shreyas Iyer experienced back pain earlier this year missing some action for Team India.

Shreyas Iyer | TwitterIndia batter Shreyas Iyer, who recently suffered a back injury has undergone successful surgery in London on Tuesday, Times of India reported.

Iyer had already missed some action at the start of the year for India citing a back issue and missed the New Zealand series at home and then the first two Tests of the Australia series as well. He came back for the last two Tests, but experienced discomfort and pain in his lower back during the Ahmedabad Test.

He had fielded for almost 170 overs when Australia batted and as a result of this, suffered a relapse of his back injury and couldn’t come out to bat when India had their chance. He was then unavailable for the three ODIs against Australia as well.

He reported to the NCA later on and despite trying other methods to delay any invasive procedure. However, scans showed that surgery was inevitable and hence it was decided he would undergo the knife in UK.

As a result, he is currently missing the IPL 2023, where he was supposed to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). And he will also miss the World Test Championship Final where India will face Australia at the Oval in London from June 7.

Shreyas Iyer underwent a successful surgery on Tuesday in London. In fact, he walked a bit too yesterday,” reported the Times of India.

The 28-year-old is expected to be out for around three months before he resumes training, and should be ideally fully fit before the ODI World Cup in India.
