The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Saturday, April 15, 2023, provided a medical update on ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and batter Shreyas Iyer, both of whom are out due to their respective back injuries.
Bumrah suffered a back injury during the England tour in 2022 and spent quite some time out of action. He returned briefly during the Australia T20Is in 2022 in September but experienced pain in his back despite the extensive rehab at the NCA.
As a result, he missed the Asia Cup 2022 and the T20 World Cup 2022 due to his injury. He was advised to undergo back surgery in New Zealand and missed the Australia Test and ODI series at home earlier this year. He was also ruled out of the ongoing IPL 2023 where he was to turn out for Mumbai Indians (MI).
In the update, BCCI revealed that Bumrah is pain-free after a successful back injury and commenced his rehab at the NCA in Bengaluru on Friday.
“Mr Jasprit Bumrah underwent surgery in New Zealand on his lower back, which was successful and he remains pain-free. The fast bowler was advised by the specialist to start his rehab six weeks after the surgery and accordingly, Mr Bumrah has commenced his rehab management at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru from Friday,” BCCI said in a statement.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer battled with a back issue missing the New Zealand ODIs at home earlier this year and also missed the first two Tests of the Australia series.
He played the last two Tests but complained of back pain during the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad, where India had to field for almost 170 overs. Iyer was then referred to the NCA for evaluation and was suggested back surgery.

He tried to defer the surgery and opted for rehab and other non-invasive methods, but was ruled out of the IPL 2023 where he was set to captain the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as his back pain didn’t improve.
Now the BCCI has revealed that Iyer will undergo back surgery next week.
“Mr Shreyas Iyer is scheduled to undergo surgery for his lower back issue next week. He will remain under the surgeon’s care for two weeks and will return to the NCA after that for rehabilitation,” the statement read.
Both players are important for the Indian team when the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup is considered which will be played in India from October 5 onwards.
