Michael Slater, the former Australia cricketer, has reportedly been charged with assaulting a police officer and arrested on Friday midnight. Police were called to a residence in Noosa Heads (Queensland) over an alleged domestic violence issue and a medical incident.
Daily Mail reported that the police is claiming that Slater,53, obstructed police and assaulted an officer who suffered a minor cut on his hand. He’s expected to appear at Noosa Magistrates Court on May 2
“The man is expected to appear before Noosa Magistrates Court on May 2. As the matter is domestic violence and medical in nature, for privacy reasons no further information will be provided,” Police told AAP in a statement.
Slater moved from Sydney to Noosa in November to address his issues with alcohol addiction, and to pursue a career as a mental health counsellor.
Slater played 74 Tests for Australia, scoring 5312 runs, and notched up 42 One Day Internationals in his career before retiring from cricket in 2004 to pursue commentating.
Earlier Slater had been in news criticizing Australian government’s decision to impose a flight ban on all travellers from India in response to escalating Covid in 2021. In 2022, he was convicted of common assault, breaching a restraining order and two other offences against a woman. He was sentenced to a two-year jail sentence to be served in the community.
