Shreyas Iyer has headed to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for further treatment and recovery of his back injury.
Iyer will be taking an injection on Thursday (March 30) and the NCA staff will decide how long the middle-order batter will require to stay at the academy after carefully assessing his fitness, Cricbuzz reported.
The report also suggests that Iyer wants to be available for selection for the WTC final in early June and has chosen not to undergo surgery.
"He has met the specialist and the NCA officials. All are on the same page that the operation can be deferred. He will follow the experts' advice," a source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
The back injury had kept Shreyas Iyer out of India’s home ODI series against New Zealand in January and also the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Nagpur last month. Iyer played the second and third Tests of the series in Delhi and Indore respectively, scoring just 42 runs in four innings. He experience back pain in the fourth and final Test in Ahmedabad and couldn’t bat in India’s innings.
The Kolkata Knight Riders skipper is set to miss a major chunk of IPL 2023 due to his recurring back injury. Earlier this week, KKR named Nitish Rana as their captain for the upcoming season, starting March 31.
KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit admitted that Shreyas Iyer will surely be missed as he is an important player for the side.
"Whatever little cricket I have played or coached, I have never gone back over things like squad unavailability. Shreyas's absence will make a difference since he is important, but this is truly unfortunate. We are hoping Shreyas will be back very soon and that will make a lot of difference to the team," Pandit said.
