Pakistan likely to play ODI World Cup 2023 matches in Bangladesh, India to stay host: Report

India are due to host the quadrennial event later this year.

Pakistan cricket team | GettyPakistan could play their 2023 ODI World Cup matches in Bangladesh, ESPNCricinfo reported on Wednesday (March 29).

India are the hosts for the quadrennial event but diplomatic tensions between both the countries might see Pakistan opting out of playing in the country.

The report further claims that the discussions over the possibility of the same are ongoing, with hybrid model for Asia Cup also being looked at as a solution.

Pakistan have the hosting rights of the Asia Cup 2023 but India will play their matches at a neutral venue. Moreover, if India reach the final of the tournament then the summit clash would also be held outside of Pakistan.

The concerns began when BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who also happens to be the Asian Cricket Council President, said last year that India will not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup and the competition will be shifted to a neutral venue.

Earlier this month, PCB chairman Najam Sethi stated that support of other ACC members will be important on the issue of hosting the Asian Cup and also acknowledged that India have big clout in the continental body.

“It's important to see how other members (of ACC) look at our stance on Asia Cup. What they think is important, but in the end we must realise how much clout the BCCI with its financial power carries in world cricket,” said Sethi at a press conference.

After the Asian Cricket Council meeting in Dubai, it was reported that India might play their Asia Cup matches away from Pakistan.

Interestingly, Sethi had also said in the same press conference that if Pakistan travel to India for the ODI World Cup), it would expect the highest standards of security for the players and also easy access for the Pakistani media and fans.
