The incident happened during the 18th over of Sri Lanka's innings.

Blair Tickner dislodging the bails | TwitterNew Zealand registered a resounding 198-run victory over Sri Lanka in the ODI series opener at Eden Park, Auckland on Saturday (March 25).

Apart from New Zealand’s dominance, the match also grabbed the headlines for a bizarre moment. During the 18th over of Sri Lanka's innings, Chamika Karunaratne hit a Blair Tickner delivery towards mid-wicket region and attempted to take a double.

Since the second run was not possible, Karunaratne tried to return to the non-striker's end but he couldn’t get there in time. Ticker removed the bails but the bails didn't light up and Karunaratne was adjudged not out by the umpire.

Later on, it was revealed that the bails didn't light up because of dead battery.

Coming to the match, the Kiwis posted 274/10 on the board after being asked to bat first. Finn Allen was the top scorer with 49-ball 51 while Rachin Ravindra (49) and Daryl Mitchell (47) also chipped in with vital contributions.

In reply, the visitors were bowled out for a paltry 76 in just 19.5 overs. Henry Shipley starred with the ball for New Zealand, returning with a five-wicket haul (5/31).
