Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action for the last five months due to back injury.

Jasprit Bumrah | GettyIndia's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out of action for the last five months due to back injury, will fly to New Zealand's Auckland to undergo surgery, Cricbuzz reported.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical staff and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) are reportedly in touch with a Kiwi surgeon, named Rowan Schouten, for Bumrah's back injury.

The surgeon has previously worked with England fast bowler Jofra Archer. As per the report, Bumrah is expected to return to action in September 2023.

Jasprit Bumrah picked up a stress fracture on his lower back prior to the Asia Cup last year. On his return in the home T20Is against Australia in September 2022, the speedster went down again with the same injury, which ruled him out of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Bumrah was supposed to make his comeback to the India team after a lengthy injury lay-off during the ODI series against Sri Lanka in January 2023 but he got ruled out once again.

On the eve of the opening ODI, BCCI issued a statement, citing that Bumrah won’t take part in the 50-over series as he needs some more time to build bowling resilience. Subsequently, he checked into the NCA and started rehabbing again.

This time around, the recurring back injury has forced Bumrah out not just from the IPL but also the World Test Championship final, slated to start on June 7 at The Oval, where the Indian team is most likely to qualify.

The BCCI and the Indian team management don’t want to take any risk or rush things regarding Bumrah's back treatment.

According to the report, BCCI have set a target of getting Bumrah fit for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, due to be held in India in October-November.
