India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev made a valid point as he was not in favor of comparing cricketing greats of the different generations as the debate of who is a better batter between Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar raged up after KOhli regained his form as has hit 3 centuries in 6 ODIs.
The legendary all-rounder stressed that each and every generation will see better cricketers than the past one, so the comparisons are just pointless. Kohli has been constantly compared with Tendulkar, and many even rate him ahead of the Master Blaster given his strike rate and pace of hitting centuries.
Notably, Tendulkar scored 49 centuries in 452 ODI innings, while Kohli has 46 in just 261 innings, and given that, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain said that every generation will produce better players, so making comparisons is useless.
Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by Gulf News: “A player of that calibre, you don’t have to pick one or two. It’s a team of XI players. I might have my own likes or dislikes, but every generation is going to get better.”
The legendary cricketer signed off by saying, “In our time, Sunil Gavaskar was one of the finest then we saw Rahul Dravid, Sachin, Virender Sehwag and this generation Rohit, Virat and next generation will be better. You will see a better cricketer and performing better.”
Recently, Kohli denied referring to himself as the GOAT (Greatest of All Time), as he considers only Tendulkar and Sir Viv Richards to be the GOAT.
He had told Star Sports: “No, I wouldn’t consider myself the GOAT of cricket. For me, only 2 people qualify for it. It’s Sachin Tendulkar and Viv Richards.”
