ICC becomes a victim of online fraud worth over $2.5 million; launches investigation

The apex body has been cheated as many as four times.

International Cricket Council | TwitterOnline frauds are nothing new in today’s world. Every now and then, common people become a victim of it and the International Cricket Council (ICC) is the latest to have fallen prey to online cheating.

According to a report in the Times of India, the ICC has been duped to the tune of over $2.5 million under an online cyberattack.

The apex body has been cheated as many as four times with the latest one being a phishing attack from fraudsters based out of the USA. The cheaters claimed to be a vendor of the ICC and used an email which was apparently familiar to the governing body.

The officials at ICC’s Dubai office were taken aback after they came to know about the fraud earlier this week. While the officials are silence on this matter, it is understood that ICC has already launched an investigation.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and his team are also under the scanner over a series of fraudulent online transactions.

While the scammed amount might not be huge for the full members like India, Australia and England, it is certainly a significant sum for the Associate nations.

Notably, the Associate nations with ODI status ranked 13-20 are paid between $ 500,000 to $ 1 million annually.

“I cannot believe it has happened in the ICC,” a member of an associate board from Europe was quoted as saying by the TOI.
