“His job is to score runs,” Mumbai chief selector slams Sarfaraz Khan for making comments after latest Test snub

Sarfaraz is yet to receive a Test call-up despite being so prolific in the Indian domestic circuit.

Sarfaraz Khan | TwitterWhen the BCCI selection committee announced Team India’s squad for the first two Tests of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia last week, there was one notable name missing from the list.

Despite being so prolific in domestic cricket for the last three seasons, Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan failed to find a spot in India's 17-member squad.

While the fans and experts were left baffled by the selection committee's call to ignore him, Sarfaraz also expressed his disappointment at not getting a chance in quite a few interviews.

Amid the recent development, Mumbai chief selector Milind Rege has slammed Sarfaraz for venting out his frustration in the public domain, insisting that the batter should focus on making runs only and he will surely earn a national call-up.

"Keep performing, but making ridiculous comments won’t help matters. Sarfaraz should refrain from making comments against his (India) selection. His job is to score runs. He has to concentrate on his batting," Rege told Mid-Day.

After being overlooked for the Australia Test series, Sarfaraz revealed in an interview that BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma had promised to pick him for the Bangladesh tour last year.

"Sarfaraz has been in tremendous form, there is no question about it. But there has to be a place in the (Indian Test team) batting line-up. His form is incomparable and unbelievable. Wherever there is an opportunity, I think he will get his chance. But right now, where is the place?" Rege added.

Milind Rege further cited the example of Mumbai head coach Amol Mazumdar not getting a chance to play for India despite scoring over 11,000 runs in First-Class cricket.

"When a man like Amol, who scored more than 11,000 First-Class runs, is a Mumbai coach, Sarfaraz should look at Amol’s plight and carry on with the game. Amol scored plenty of runs, but he was never selected because there was no place in the national side," he remarked.
