Cricket Advisory Committee interviews former players including Chetan Sharma for selection panel spots

Chetan Sharma had re-applied for the post after being sacked in November last year.

Chetan Sharma | TwitterAfter India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup 2022, the BCCI sacked the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee and invited fresh applications for the high-profile posts.

According to a report published in ESPNCricinfo, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshna Naik, has conducted interviews of former cricketers like Ajay Ratra, Amay Khurasiya, and S Sharath for a spot in India’s senior men’s selection panel.

Apart from the aforementioned candidates, the CAC also interviewed Chetan Sharma and Harvinder Singh, who had re-applied for the high-profile posts.

As per the report, the shortlisted candidates made presentations before the panel, which will be submitting its recommendations to the board this week.

The other candidate in the contention is former India opener SS Das, from East Zone. As far as the South Zone is concerned – former Tamil Nadu batter Sharath has emerged as a strong contender to replace Sunil Joshi from South Zone as the latter decided not to re-apply.

Sharath is currently heading the junior men’s team panel. It was his committee that selected India’s U-19 World Cup winning squad last year.

It is likely that Das will replace Debasis Mohanty from the East Zone, with the latter completing his maximum-stipulated cumulative five-year term across various selection committees.

Likewise, the board would have had to appoint a new selector from West Zone as Abey Kuruvilla, who was part of the Chetan Sharma-led panel, fulfilled a maximum tenure of five years.

Earlier this week, it emerged that Chetan Sharma could continue as chief selector after he attended BCCI’s review meeting that discussed India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2022 performance and roadmap for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The incumbent panel has not been asked to keep track of the fourth round of Ranji Trophy games. It was given an extension till 2022-end to pick up squads and follow the third-round Ranji matches from December 27-30.
