"Will decide after advice and recommendations"- PCB chief Najam Sethi on Babar Azam's captaincy future

Najam Sethi called Babar the star of Pakistan and son of soil.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi reacted to questions over Babar Azam’s captaincy future after the latest changes in Pakistan cricket in the wake of the team’s crushing 0-3 defeat in the Test series against England at home last week.

After Pakistan suffered an embarrassing defeat in the home Test series, Ramiz Raja was sacked as PCB chief and the Muhammad Wasim-led selection panel was also removed, and now there are reports that Babar might be the next one to lose the captaincy, at least in Test cricket.

Well now, Sethi broke silence on Babar's captaincy future with an absolute gold remark on the current Pakistan skipper, saying he is son of the Pakistan soil, who will always remain there.

Najam Sethi said at the press conference: “Babar Azam is the star of Pakistan. Without him the Pakistan team would be without its son of the soil. He is in our hearts and will always remain there.”

On being asked whether Pakistan will be looking for separate captains for two different formats, the PCB chief said: “I will listen to advice and recommendations from the people I appoint as I don't make cricketing decisions by myself.”

Speaking about the ongoing tussle between BCCI and PCB over 2023 Asia Cup and World Cup, Sethi noted: “We will obey whatever the government would suggest to us and we will seek the government's advice when the time arrives, similar to the last time I was the chairman.”

He signed off by saying, “As far as the Asia Cup is concerned, I will go to ACC (Asian Cricket Council) and see what the situation is and we'll take a decision that is in the better interest of the game. We have to see what the other board's position is, we have to play cricket with everyone, and we will not take any step which can cause any isolation.”
