David Warner's lifetime captaincy ban has been a hot topic in Australian cricket for the past week, with the veteran opener withdrawing his application to have the ban lifted while accusing the panel of public lynching.
The swashbuckling opener was handed a lifetime captaincy ban for his role in the famous 2018 ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town. Well, after many Australian greats shared their views on the matter, Ian Chappell came forward to label the calls as pointless.
The former Australia captain believes there is no point in lifting Warner’s lifetime captaincy ban, given his age, while slamming Cricket Australia (CA) for its poor handling of the matter to save themselves.
Ian Chappell was quoted as saying by Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports: “If Cricket Australia were to lift the ban on Warner, what’s that going to do? I mean, you’re not going to appoint Warner captain of any Australian team, are you? He’s too old. And he’s not going to be given the role because the captain has got to be young enough to be able to lead by example, and those days are gone for David.”
Chappell feels Warner might have wanted to lead Sydney Thunder in the BBL 12, and that is why he wanted his captaincy ban to be lifted, saying he would have been a good captain for the club.
He signed off by saying, “I think David probably wanted the leadership for his BBL team (the Sydney Thunder) so that he could help them. He (Warner) would have been a very good leader for them, he thinks very aggressively about the game. Whatever leadership position he had, he would be good at it.”
Criticizing CA, the legendary cricketer said: “They (CA) look after themselves, they don’t look after the player. This (Warner saga) is just another example of Cricket Australia not being very good, it has been handled badly. My point is that Cricket Australia will never do anything in the interest of the players or the player; they will only ever do anything to protect their own backside.”
