England's limited-overs captain Jos Buttler admitted that he is unsure about his return to Test cricket, as he is currently enjoying the demanding task of captaining the side in ODI and T20I cricket.
Buttler, who led England to the T20 World Cup title in Australia last month, played his last Test match against Australia in the Ashes in January 2022. In his absence, Ben Foakes has cemented his place as England's wicketkeeper-batter in Tests, with Ollie Pope doing the duties currently in Pakistan.
Notably, the star wicketkeeper-batter has so far scored 2,907 runs in 57 Tests since making his debut against India in 2014. However, Buttler has now shifted his focus to ODI cricket, as England is aiming to defend the ICC Cricket World Cup title in India next year.
When asked about a potential return to the Test side, Jos Buttler told Sky Sports: “We will wait and see, I don't know for the minute, to be honest. I am really enjoying what I'm doing at the moment, and getting the opportunity to captain the white-ball teams has been a great challenge and really enjoyable.”
Meanwhile, England has a three-match ODI series in South Africa in January and two home ODI series against New Zealand and Ireland in September before the World Cup 2023, and Buttler would really like to find out the best combination during these matches for the mega event in India.
England captain further said, “The attention turns to the 50-over World Cup and trying to think ahead and planning how we tackle that tournament. We've had a couple of retirements from the side, some stalwarts in Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan.”
Buttler concluded, “We've got to work out how we fill that hole and give guys the opportunity to take those positions up and look to build a balanced team ahead of the tournament.”
