Former England captain Michael Vaughan shared his sentiments on whether the Indian team will win the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup in 2023, which will be hosted by India itself. India, under Rohit Sharma, reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup but fell at the penultimate hurdle, losing to Buttler's England by 10 wickets while failing to defend 169.
England, on the other hand, won their second T20 World Cup on Sunday in Melbourne, beating Pakistan in the final.
Michael Vaughan has written in his column in The Telegraph, that India must swallow their pride and get inspired by the England team on how to win ICC trophies. Incidentally, England is also the current ODI world champion.
India has not won any ICC trophies since the 2013 Champions Trophy, though reaching the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup and 2017 Champions Trophy. They also made it into the knockouts of the 2016 T20 World Cup, the 2019 ODI World Cup, and the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Vaughan went a step ahead and said England will head to India as favorites for the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and it would "utter nonsense" if India is billed as the favorites for the showpiece 50-over event.
"The next big ticket is to win the 50 over World Cup in India next year. They have good spin options and you have to put them down as favorites for that tournament as well. When the tournament starts people will have India as favorites on home soil. Utter nonsense. England will be the team to beat without any question and that is going to be the case for a few more years to come," Vaughan wrote in his column.
Vaughan, furthermore, said that Buttler has a good opportunity to emulate MS Dhoni's success in white-ball cricket, saying the 32-year-old led England remarkably well in his first major tournament as captain.
Buttler, 32, became only the 2nd wicketkeeper-batter to win the T20 World Cup as captain after Dhoni in 2007. MS Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the most successful modern-day captains in limited-overs cricket.
Dhoni remains the only captain to win all three white-ball ICC trophies in the T20 World Cup in 2007, the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013 for India.
"Now Buttler has landed the World Cup at the first time of asking and at the age of 32 he has the chance to build his own legacy. MS Dhoni went on for years as India captain. Buttler can do the same, especially now he is concentrating on one format," Vaughan added.
