Nepal Police gets 5 days of additional custody of Sandeep Lamichhane in rape accusation case

Sandeep Lamichhane was arrested on arrival in Nepal and produced in court.

Sandeep Lamichhane | AFPNepal cricketing star Sandeep Lamichhane might find himself in deep trouble after the Kathmandu District Court on Thursday, October 13 sent him into 5 more days of police custody as the investigation into the allegation of rape against him continues.

The deadline for investigation ended on October 12 but the cricketer was produced in court earlier in the day, seeking an extension of police custody.

A 17-year-old girl accused him of raping her in a hotel room in Nepal. As per the case, Lamichhane took the girl to various places in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur for a visit on August 21 and raped her in a hotel in Kathmandu the same night.

The court had issued an arrest order against the former Nepal captain Lamichhane on October 6 and had granted 7 days of judicial custody, which began after he surrendered himself. He was arrested on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

The leg-spinner was playing in Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2022) when the warrant was issued and had left the tournament to return back. However, he spent a week or so at an undisclosed location while sharing updates on his Facebook about his mental health and commitment to come back to Nepal.

The court can grant time up to 25 days from his arrest to investigate the case before filing a criminal case against him. Lamichhane has been claiming innocence in court after having said earlier that he would fully cooperate with the investigation.
