BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was reportedly keen to continue in his role at the national cricket body, but he was denied as there is no precedent for giving a second term to the role.
However, the legendary cricketer was reportedly offered the IPL chairmanship instead, but he denied the offer by saying he couldn’t head BCCI’s sub-committee, especially after heading the governing body.
The BCCI source revealed: “Sourav was offered IPL chairmanship but he politely declined the offer. His logic was that he cannot accept becoming head of a sub-committee in BCCI after heading the same institution. He had expressed interest in continuing in the position.”
After Ganguly refused to take the IPL chairmanship, the current BCCI treasurer, Arun Singh Dhumal, is likely to become the IPL chairman. Meanwhile, the names of the members of the BCCI Apex Council and IPL Governing Council will be announced soon once the final list is completed in a few days.
On the other hand, a BCCI source also revealed that 1983 World Cup winning cricketer Roger Binny is likely to replace Ganguly as the BCCI President and the decision can be taken at the next AGM on October 18, while Jay Shah is likely to continue as BCCI Secretary for his second consecutive term.
Shah, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is also likely to replace Ganguly as India's representative at the ICC. A BCCI source told PTI: “An influential minister in the central government played a key role in deciding the positions in the Board set up.”
