The inaugural edition of Global Power Cricket League (GPCL) T20 came to an end on Sunday (October 9), with Indian Sapphires and Australian Golds being declared joint winners because of the inclement weather in Delhi’s Yamuna Sports Complex Cricket Ground.

The decision was taken by an expert committee after incessant rain abandoned both the semifinals and the final match.

Since Indian Sapphires and Australian Golds had topped Pool A and Pool B respectively in the group stage, they were rightfully declared as joint champions.

After the decision, Indian Sapphires skipper Munaf Patel and Australian Golds captain were handed the GPCL T20 trophy. During the glittering presentation ceremony, both the squads posed for pictures with the coveted trophy.   

Speaking to Circle of Cricket, Ms. Kanthi D Suresh, the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Power Sportz, said the trophy will be with Australia for the first six months while India will have it for the next six months.

“Trophy will be kept in the Australian high commission to India for the first 6 months and then handed over to the Ministry of External Affairs, India,” Kanthi stated.

Power Sportz – the organiser and official broadcaster of GPCL T20 – telecasted the action in 95 territories worldwide and provided an ideal platform to the Indian diaspora global youth cricketers to showcase their T20 skills.

With the kind of interest the tournament has generated in just its inaugural year, Kanthi D Suresh promises an even better Season 2.

“We are looking to make it an annual affair, and are also planning to organize it in Middle East, USA, Canada, UK, and South Africa from next year onwards,” she remarked, adding that the players are keen and curious to know the venue for Season 2.
