Australia captain Aaron Finch, has revealed the actual reason for demoting himself to the number 4 position in the first T20I against England which was played in Perth, on Sunday (October 9).
He said that it was about giving Cameron Green a taste of batting at the top, but he also revealed that the defending T20 World champions will end their experiment in the upcoming T20Is after they lost the first T20I to England.
In 2 T20Is against the West Indies and against England on Sunday, Green had opened the batting with Warner. Green’s flair with the bat was on full display in India when the 23-year-old batted at a strike rate of over 200 in the three T20I series which Australia lost 2-1.
He will not, however, be a part of Australia's starting lineup for the T20 World Cup, according to Finch, who feels that it was simply a matter of providing some game time to the young all-rounder.
"We're going to keep trying things. I'm going to go back to the top for the next game, which was always the plan. We'd get to the first two (T20s against West Indies) and then this game, then I'd go back to the top as preparation for the World Cup," he told Fox Cricket after the match.
"It was just about giving 'Greeny' an opportunity at the top and to keep trying things. After this little burst, especially (with) guys coming off a lot of injuries as well you have to be prepared. So just trying to get as many games into Greeny in case he has to be called into the squad," he remarked.
On Sunday, England posted a massive total of 208/6 in the first innings, owing to stellar knocks from Alex Hales (84 off 51 balls) and Jos Buttler (68 off 32 balls).
The hosts were cruising toward the target thanks to David Warner’s sublime knock (73 off 44 balls) and Marcus Stoinis’ explosive knock (35 off 15 balls). But in the death overs, they lost a flurry of wickets and eventually fell short of the target by 8 runs.
