The inaugural edition of the Global Power Cricket League (GPCL) T20 finally got underway in Delhi’s Yamuna Sports Complex Cricket Ground on Sunday (October 2).
It was a proud day for Power Sportz, the organiser and official broadcaster of GPCL T20, as their months of hard work and dedication were on display to the world.
On the opening day of the tournament, two matches took place. While South African Emeralds locked horns with Sri Lankan Violets in the first game, Indian Sapphires faced American Indigos in the second encounter.
Since players from different countries with international appearances were seen in action, the GPCL T20 managed to grab the eyeballs on the first day itself. There was high quality of cricket on display as well, with players sporting colourful jerseys matching their team name and country’s colour.
Speaking to Circle of Cricket, Ms. Kanthi D. Suresh, the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Power Sportz, said that the Global Power Cricket League is here to stay.
“It’s a proud day for the entire Power Sportz team. With the GPCL T20, we have set a platform for the Indian diaspora global youth cricketers to showcase their skills across the globe. In the coming years, we will take the league to Middle East, USA, Canada, UK, and South Africa,” Ms. Kanthi said.
Coming to the opening day matches, South African Emeralds defeated Sri Lankan Violets by 26 runs whereas Indian Sapphires thrashed American Indigos by 65 runs.
Riding on Rahman Waseem’s blistering knock of 62-ball 97, the Emeralds posted 171/6 on the board. Chasing the target, the Violets managed 145/7 in their allotted 20 overs as Udara’s half-century (66 off 30 balls) went in vain.
On the back of Abhimanyu Yadav’s fifty, Indian Sapphires posted 149/8 on the board. In the second half, they bowled out the Indigos for a paltry 84 to start their campaign on a positive note.
Two matches will be held on Monday (October 3) as well. While English Reds will take on Scottish Mulberries in the first game, Australian Golds will face Irish Olives in the second clash.
