Amid the anticipation, the inaugural edition of the Global Power Cricket League (GPCL) T20 got underway in Delhi’s Yamuna Sports Complex Cricket Ground on Sunday (October 2).
The tournament kicked off with an international flavour as players from different countries were seen in action. There was high quality of cricket on display, with players also sporting colourful jerseys matching their team name and country’s colour.
On the opening day, two matches took place. While South African Emeralds locked horns with Sri Lankan Violets in the first game, Indian Sapphires faced American Indigos in the second encounter.
Power Sportz – the official broadcaster of GPCL T20 – covered both the matches to perfection, with HD cameras capturing different skillsets, emotions, celebrations and showing aesthetic graphics to the fans.
On the opening day, two matches took place. While South African Emeralds locked horns with Sri Lankan Violets in the first game, Indian Sapphires faced American Indigos in the second encounter.
In the first match, Robert Frylinck-led South African Emeralds side defeated Sri Lankan Violets by 26 runs.
Riding on Rahman Waseem’s blistering knock of 62-ball 97, the Emeralds posted 171/6 on the board. Chasing the target, the Violets managed 145/7 in their allotted 20 overs as Udara’s half-century (66 off 30 balls) went in vain.
On the other hand, Indian Sapphires also started their campaign on a winning note, thrashing American Indigos in the second match.
On the back of Abhimanyu Yadav’s fifty, Indian Sapphires posted 149/8 on the board. In the second half, they bowled out the Indigos for a paltry 84 to win the game by a huge margin of 65 runs.
Talking about the GPCL T20, the eight participating teams have been divided into two groups. Indian Sapphires, English Reds, Scottish Mulberries, and American Indigos feature in Pool A whereas Australian Golds, South African Emeralds, Sri Lankan Violets, and Irish Olives are part of Pool B.
Every team will play three matches in the group stage before the top two teams from each group will move to the semi-final, where the toppers of each pool will take on the second-placed side of the other pool.
Ultimately, the winners of the semi-final will face each other in the final on October 9.
