Kirk Edwards to lead Scottish Mulberries in the first season of GPCL

Kirk Edwards will captain Scottish Mulberries in the inaugural GPCL seasonFor a team to do well in any tournament, the captain’s role is very important and West Indies international Kirk Edwards has been given the responsibility to lead Scottish Mulberries in the inaugural edition of the Global Power Cricket League (GPCL), slated to be held in India from October 2 to October 9.

Edwards has been around for a long time, having made his debut in professional cricket way back in 2003. The 37-year-old has represented West Indies in 17 Tests and 16 ODIs, amassing over 1300 runs across formats with three centuries.

In First-Class cricket, Edwards boasts 5447 runs to his name from 99 matches with 10 hundreds while he has scored 1864 runs in 87 List A games including three tons.

As far as his T20 exploits are concerned – Edwards has scored 203 runs in 19 matches with the highest score of 45.

His international experience could act as a catalyst for the youngsters in the Scottish Mulberries squad. Notably, the 14-member squad includes a number of young guns, especially the Indian diaspora global youth cricketers.

Talking about the GPCL T20, the eight teams have been divided into two groups. Scottish Mulberries are slotted in Pool A alongside Indian Sapphires, English Reds and American Indigos whereas Australian Golds, South African Emeralds, Sri Lankan Violets, and Irish Olives feature in Pool B.

Every team will play one match against the other three sides before the top two teams from each group will move to the semi-final, where the toppers of each pool will take on the second-placed side of the other pool.

Ultimately, the winners of the semi-final will face each other in the final. All the games will be played at Yamuna Sports Complex Cricket Ground in New Delhi.

Scottish Mulberries will open their campaign against English Reds on October 3.
