What is GPCL (Global Power Cricket League)?

The inaugural season of GPCL is being held in India under the NRI festival.

A brand new T20 league named Global Power Cricket League (GPCL) is all set to take the sporting world by storm next month.

The USP of the tournament is that eight teams from different nationalities having distinct cultures and dialects will take part in it, giving the fans a unique experience of watching the game.

GPCL is the brainchild of Power Sportz, India's first live digital Sports channel, aspiring to cater to the cricket loving Indian diaspora population yearns to have the sport played in their country of stay.

While the inaugural season of GPCL is being held in India under the NRI festival, it will move to Middle East, USA, Canada, UK, and South Africa in the subsequent editions.

The participating teams are from India, Australia, England, USA, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Sri Lanka, going by the names of Indian Sapphires, Australian Golds, English Reds, American Indigos, Irish Olives, Scottish Mulberries, South African Emeralds and Sri Lankan Violets.

The eight teams have been divided into two groups. Indian Sapphires, English Reds, Scottish Mulberries and American Indigos feature in Pool A whereas Australian Golds, South African Emeralds, Sri Lankan Violets and Irish Olives are part of Pool B.

Every team will play one match against the other three sides before the top two teams from each group will move to the semi-final, where the toppers of each pool will take on the second-placed side of the other pool. 

Ultimately, the winners of the semi-final will face each other in the final. All the games will be played at Yamuna Sports Complex Cricket Ground in New Delhi from October 2 to October 9, 2022.

In a first of its kind, the GPCL organisers have made it mandatory for each team to pick players of Indian origin in their squad while the average age of the side shouldn’t cross 25 years, thereby, catering to the Indian diaspora global youth cricketers.

The marquee international cricketers featuring in the competition include Munaf Patel, Yusuf Pathan, Ian Bell, Gulbadin Naib, Callum Ferguson, Narsingh Deonarine, Dilshan Munaweera, Kirk Edwards among others.

Power Sportz is the official broadcaster of this T20 league. It will be telecasted worldwide with 21 HD cameras capturing the action, showing skills, emotions, celebrations, aesthetic graphics to the fans to perfection.

Renowned anchor Chloe Amanda Bailey is associated with the GPCL. The organisers have also invited legendary stars like Usain Bolt, Ronaldo de Assis Moreira and Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior to grace the opening ceremony, scheduled for October 1 at Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi.

During the course of the tournament, there will be a VIP presence at the venue, which includes legendary cricketers from India’s 1983 World Cup triumph, Indian cabinet ministers, chief ministers of NCR region among others.
