Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra, has made a surprising remark on Jasprit Bumrah's bowling action after the Indian speedster was ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022, starting on August 27 in the UAE, due to an injury.
Bumrah was last seen in action in England and then the premier pacer was rested for the West Indies and Zimbabwe tours, and later it emerged that he was nursing an unknown injury.
Notably, Bumrah is not also taking part in Team India’s every series, despite being an all-format cricketer.
Reacting to this latest development, Chopra said that Bumrah's career is going to revolve around injuries due to his unorthodox bowling action. He also claimed Bumrah's bowling action makes him more prone to injuries as compared to other fast bowlers.
Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel: “We don't know the nature of his injury. Yes, there is a problem... He doesn't play regularly. But another thing that one needs to consider is that his bowling action is very unusual. His ligaments receive pressure in different places in the body is not very natural.”
He continued, “Bowling in itself is not very natural. It gives a lot of loads (on the body) and gives rise to injuries. His (Bumrah's) action is very unorthodox that challenges bio-mechanics a bit. In such a case, the chances of injury are more. Maybe it's not about the workload, it's about who Bumrah is. So, injuries are going to be there with him.”
As injuries have kept Bumrah out of action quite often, Chopra feels that the Indian team management and the pacer himself must find a solution for that to avoid further concerns.
He signed off by saying, “Jasprit Bumrah is a national asset. He remains in number one rankings across formats. But if he is injured, then there will be issues.”
