The late Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds will have an international cricket stadium named after him in his hometown of Townsville. Notably, Symonds passed away earlier this year in a one-person car crash just outside his hometown at the age of 46.

Reports have suggested that the Townsville City Council has decided to rename the Riverway Stadium in Symonds’ honor to celebrate the 46-year-old late cricketer’s legacy.

The decision was taken after Councilor Maurie Soars urged the Townsville City Council to consider commemorating Symonds’ contribution to the game of cricket.

Symonds was one of the few indigenous cricketers who played for Australia in international cricket. He made his Australia debut in 1998 and represented the side in 26 Tests, 198 ODIs, and 14 T20Is. He played a key role in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in 2003 and 2007. Apart from this, he was also a great fielder and occasional bowler as well.

As reported by NewsCorp, Maurie Soars stated: “The work he did around here with the juniors and the local cricket scene was beyond compare and he did it without a voice. He did not want to take away or distract from the efforts that were being provided.”

Notably, the Riverway Stadium has so far hosted two ODI matches and will be soon hosting the upcoming ODI series between Australia and Zimbabwe later this month.
