Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif raised concerns over the shuffling of Indian captains of late. He said that he has first time seen India doing this and they are repeating the same thing Pakistan did in the 1990s.

Ever since Virat Kohli left the captaincy, Team India have seen a plethora of skippers leading the side. Although Rohit Sharma has been named the full-time all-format skipper, he hasn’t led the team in all the series due to injuries and rest, which has led to others getting the opportunity.

Apart from Rohit, the last few months have seen KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Shikhar Dhawan leading India in different formats and series.

Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, Rashid Latif talked about the constant shuffling of Indian captains over the past few months. He said that they are doing the same thing as Pakistan did in the 1990s.

“Everyone talks about backup. But they have now produced seven backup captains in the past year! This is the first time I'm seeing this in India's history. Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah... they are repeating the same mistake as Pakistan's in the 1990s,” Rashid Latif said.

Latif said that rather than finding a solid opener and middle-order batters, the Indian team is just focusing more on leadership. He stressed that they need a captain like Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli.

“They haven't found a solid opener, nor do they have a stable middle-order. They just want a new captain. No captain is playing consistently for them. KL Rahul is unfit now, Rohit was unfit before. Virat is mentally unfit. So, they will have to think about it. They are changing so many captains.. they need a leader like Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli,” he said.

India are currently playing five-match T20I series against West Indies. Having already won the ODI series under Dhawan’s captaincy, they have taken a 1-0 lead in the T20Is under Rohit. After this, they will travel to Zimbabwe, where the southpaw will again lead the young side.
