Officials have confirmed that South Africa all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo will miss the last two ODIs against England while he undergoes the procedures after suffering a concussion in the first one-dayer on Tuesday (July 19) at the Chester-le Street.

After a collision between Phehlukwayo and skipper Keshav Maharaj, the former sustained an injury on the field as his head met Maharaj’s shoulder. Dwaine Pretorius was brought in as a concussion substitute and was allowed to bowl as well.  He had little success, though, with figures of 0-26 in three overs.

A three-match T20I series will come after the ODI series. Now, Phehlukwayo will aim to be fit for the opening of the three-game Twenty20 International series, which will be played from Wednesday (July 27).

On Tuesday, the visitors chose to bat first after winning the toss. Rassie van der Dussen's spectacular knock (134 off 117 balls) and Jaaneman Malan  (57 off 77 balls) and Aiden Markram's (77 off 61 balls) gritty half-centuries, the Proteas posted a massive total of 333/5 in 50 overs.

In response, England’s openers Jason Roy (43 off 62) and Jonny Bairstow (63 off 71 balls) put on a brilliant 102-run stand. Joe Root scored a magnificent 77-ball 86 but all the other English batters couldn’t get going and the team was dismissed for 271.

This match also marked the end of Ben Stokes’ ODI career.

The 2nd and 3rd ODI will be played on Friday (July 22) and Sunday (July 24).
