Jasprit Bumrah | GettyJasprit Bumrah regained the top position in the ICC ODI bowling rankings after a career-best haul of six for 19 that helped India register a thumping 10-wicket victory over England in the first ODI at The Oval on Tuesday (July 12).

Bumrah had lost the numero uno spot to New Zealand’s Trent Boult in February 2020 after being at the summit for most of the preceding two years.

Only the second Indian pacer after Kapil Dev to achieve No. 1 spot in the ODI bowling rankings, Bumrah jumped five places to attain top billing in the 50-over format.

Boult is now holding the second spot while Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi (third), Australia’s Josh Hazelwood (fourth) and Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman (fifth) complete the top five.

Bumrah’s new-ball partner Mohammad Shami has also made gains in the ODI bowling rankings after returning with the figures of 3/31 at the Oval and playing his role in bundling England out for a paltry 110 in 25.2 overs.

Shami has moved up three slots to reach joint-23rd position along with teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Rohit Sharma top-scored for India in the first ODI with an unbeaten 76 but the skipper still remains in fourth place on the rankings for batters.

Rohit, however, has moved within a solitary rating point of teammate and third-placed batter Virat Kohli and could surpass the latter with further good performances in the remaining two ODIs.

Veteran India opener Shikhar Dhawan chipped in with an unbeaten 31 in the first ODI and as a result, he gained one spot to equal 12th on the batter rankings.
