'He was the obvious choice' - Ben Stokes on Jos Buttler becoming England's new white-ball captain

Ben Stokes, the captain of England's Test team, has responded to Jos Buttler being named the nation's limited-overs captain, saying that the wicketkeeper-batter was the obvious choice for the position following Eoin Morgan's retirement.

After Morgan announced his retirement from the game earlier this week, the ECB named Buttler as England's new captain for the white-ball formats on Thursday. In ODIs and T20Is, the 31-year-old was already acting as England's vice-captain.

Jos Buttler was the obvious choice, according to Stokes, who also expressed confidence that the wicketkeeper will uphold the same values and outlook as his predecessor. He added that the wicketkeeper should lead the team forward at this point.

"He was the obvious choice once Morgs decided to retire. He’s been vice-captain for a number of years. Nothing will change.

"Jos will continue the ethos and mindset that Morgs brought to us from 2015 so, honestly, I don’t think you’ll see anything change whatsoever. It is Jos’ time to take the team forward and I’m pretty sure it will be pretty much the same as Morgs left the team," Stokes said.

Regarding Buttler's position in the Test team, Stokes acknowledged that the 31-year-old's status as the limited-overs captain will not play any role in him getting a berth in the Test squad. The star all-rounder also declared that moving ahead, he would want the present squad.

"I don’t think him being appointed one-day captain does any more or less good. The team we have here is the Test team I want going forward."

"When we sat down at the start of the summer and selected the squad, it was because those were the guys we wanted in every position and they were the best to do that. At the moment, it’s about giving this team time to succeed and perform," said Stokes.
