English batter Joe Root has received his ICC Men's Test Player of the Year for the 2021 cap. Current Test skipper Ben Stokes flung the cap to the right-hander in the dressing room after a short speech as the players prepared themselves for the Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand.
Root looked a class apart in 2021. The former English Test skipper single-handedly carried his team’s batting line-up last year. Even though England didn’t have the greatest of seasons, he continued his red-hot form and made sure that his team fought till the very end.
He surpassed many records in 2021 and was the leading run-getter in Tests. Root scored 1,708 runs in 15 Test matches to go with six centuries. He also joined the likes of Mohammad Yousuf and Sir Vivian Richards to become only the third cricketer in the world to score over 1,700 Test runs in a calendar year.

Root’s red hot form is continuing even in 2022. So far in 7 matches, he has scored 484 runs at an average of 44 to go with 3 centuries. He recently scored a century, his 26th ton, in the first Test against New Zealand and became only the second Englishman after Sir Alastair Cook to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.
