"You’ve been an inspiration to young girls”: Sachin Tendulkar congratulates Mithali Raj on a stellar career

After Mithali Raj announced her retirement from international cricket, Sachin Tendulkar has contributed to the flood of praises that has poured in. Mithali retired as one of the greatest female cricketers of all time, with numerous batting and captaincy records to her credit. 

Raj debuted for India as a 16-year-old in an ODI against Ireland in 1999 and scored 68 against South Africa in a Women's World Cup match in Christchurch in March, which proved to be her final international appearance.

Her 10,868 runs made her the all-time leading run-scorer in women's international cricket.

Mithali ended a 23-year international career as the highest run-getter in ODIs (7805 in 232 innings at an average of 50.68). Mithali played 12 Test matches for India, amassing 699 runs. She also had a double-century in the game's longest format.

"Like all journey, this one too must come to an end. Today is the day I retire from all forms of international cricket," the 39-year-old said in a statement on social media.

Sachin Tendulkar, the record holder for most runs in Men's ODI and Test cricket, including the record for 100 international tons, took to Twitter and called Mithali an inspiration to young girls, who want to play for India.

“Congratulations on a stellar career Mithali Raj! Your contribution to Indian Women’s Cricket over the last 23 years has been immense and you have been an inspiration to young girls wanting to play for India. Wishing you the very best for all your future endeavours,” said Tendulkar in his tweet.
