After Mithali Raj announced her retirement from international cricket on Wednesday (June 8), BCCI shared a heartfelt message for the legendary cricketer on social media, lauding her contribution to Indian cricket and her rich legacy.
Taking to Twitter, BCCI wrote: “Your contribution to Indian Cricket has been phenomenal. Congratulations @M_Raj03 on an amazing career. You leave behind a rich legacy. We wish you all the very best for your second innings.”
Mithali, 39, revealed his retirement decision on Twitter, where she shared a lengthy statement summing up her 23-year-long career.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah also congratulated Mithali Raj on her illustrious career and wished her the best for future endeavours.
“A wonderful career comes to an end! Thank you @M_Raj03 for your immense contribution to Indian cricket. Your leadership on the field has brought much glory to the National women's team. Congratulations for an illustrious innings on the field and best wishes for your next innings!,” Shah tweeted.
Having started her India career in 1999 as a teenager, Mithali grew to become one of the all-time greats of the game. She represented India in 12 Tests, 232 ODIs, and 89 T20Is and also captained the national side to the finals of the two World Cup tournaments in 2005 and 2017.
Mithali amassed 699 Test runs including the highest score of 214 and four half-centuries to her name. In ODIs, she made 7805 runs and is the most run-getter in the format with 7 tons and 64 fifties, including the best of 125*. She is the first player to score seven consecutive half-centuries in ODIs.
In the shortest format, Mithali Raj scored 2364 runs with 17 fifties and a best score of 97*.
