Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis was hospitalized after complaining of chest pains as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh clashed in the second Test of the series in Mirpur, Dhaka on Monday, May 23. The first Test ended in a draw and Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first in the second Test match.

Mendis fell ill while on the field. He was complaining of chest pains and had to be taken off the field in the 23rd over of the Bangladeshi innings. Medical personnel attended to him, but he departed the field shortly after, gripping his chest.

“Mendis had to be taken to the hospital for proper diagnosis and better management of his condition. He may suffer from dehydration, which could be the reason behind his discomfort. It might be gastritis as a possible reason for his discomfort. Once the diagnosis is completed, it will be possible to tell the thing exactly," said Manzur Hossain Chowdhury, the Bangladesh Cricket Board doctor quoted by Cricbuzz.

"He underwent an ECG and there was no major issue in the report," said a Bangladesh Cricket Board official. "Hopefully he will report back to the hotel within a couple of hours as he is now under observation," he added.
