Currently the all-rounder is playing for DC in IPL 2022.

In the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a 19-year-old cricketer with the name 'Axar' on his shirt was a substitute fielder for Mumbai Indians (MI). There wasn't much known about him at the time, and because he didn't get a chance to play.

When the young Gujarati made his IPL debut in 2014 for the then-Kings XI Punjab, everyone learned that his name is Axar Patel, but it is pronounced 'Akshar.' Many people were puzzled why there is a variation in spelling if it is pronounced Akshar.

Now, in 2022, Patel, a left-arm spinning all-rounder who has built a name for himself as one of the finest in the IPL while playing for Delhi Capitals and in Test matches for India, has disclosed how his name's spelling changed and what the correct spelling is.

Speaking to Gaurav Kapur on Breakfast with Champions, Patel said, "The correct spelling is Akshar. So, I was in Bangalore for the U-19 camp before the World Cup. The team was going to Australia and everyone told me to get a passport made as I didn't have one. I needed a license and Leaving certificate from school. I was 17 at that time, so how could I get a driving license at that age.

"When I went to school to get the leaving certificate the principal made it Axar. The NCA people said, 'You usually write Akshar then why is it Axar in your passport?!' Then I called my Dad and he said, 'Now nothing can be changed'," Patel elaborated on it further.

After that, he stated that he had received calls from the Mumbai Indians and later Team India, so why fix something that isn't broken, and they continued to spell Axar.
