The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup is likely to be moved out of Sri Lanka due to the ongoing political and economic crisis in the country.
The island nation is dealing with its worst financial turmoil in seven decades as citizens are facing severe shortages of food, fuel, and other essentials. The country of 22 million people has also experienced weeks of power blackouts in the wake of the economic and political crisis.
Asia Cup 2022, in a T20 format, was announced to be held in Sri Lanka between August 27 and September 11. Sri Lanka was declared host for the multi-nation event after an AGM was held between the member countries last month.
All five Test teams including Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh were set to feature in the competition, with one more team to join them after a qualifying tournament which was scheduled to be held from August 20.
According to a geosuper report, Sri Lanka can lose the hosting rights for the Asia Cup due to the current political tensions. The report claimed there is a possibility that the hosting rights will be transferred to another country.
The schedule of the forthcoming tournament will reportedly be discussed at the quarterly meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The report also mentioned that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja and Chief Executive Faisal Hasnain will attend the meeting in Dubai on Sunday (April 17).
